Ohio Veteran Benefits 2025-26 | Tax Exemptions, Property Relief, Education, & Recreation
Welcome to the Benefit Breakdown—your quick, down-and-dirty guide to veteran benefits in 20 minutes or less.
In this video, I cover everything Ohio veterans and their families need to know for 2025, including the newest updates to tax, property, education, recreation, and employment benefits.
Here’s what we’ll go over:
• Income Tax Exemptions: Ohio fully exempts military retirement pay and Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) income from state taxes. Active-duty pay for residents stationed outside Ohio is also fully exempt, and nonresident military spouses don’t pay Ohio state or local taxes.
• State Veteran Bonus: Tax-free, one-time payments for service during qualifying conflicts like the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
• Property Tax Relief: Disabled veterans with a 100% VA rating (or their surviving spouses) get a $50,000 home-value exemption. Additional savings available under the state’s General Homestead Exemption.
• Vehicle & License Benefits: Free registration and special license plates for 100% disabled veterans, Purple Heart, or Medal of Honor recipients—plus free driver’s licenses for eligible veterans.
• Education Support: The Ohio GI Promise gives in-state tuition to nonresident veterans and dependents. Scholarships are available for children and spouses of fallen or severely disabled veterans, and the Ohio National Guard Scholarship pays full tuition for Guard members. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans can also receive honorary high-school diplomas.
• Recreation Benefits: Free five-year hunting and fishing licenses for 100% disabled veterans and former POWs; 10 percent year-round discount on camping and cabins for all veterans; free camping for 100% disabled or POW veterans at Ohio state parks.
• Watercraft Exemptions: Free registration for 100% disabled veterans, Medal of Honor recipients, and former POWs.
• Employment & Licensing: 20 percent bonus on civil-service exams, waived teaching-license fees for military and spouses, and guaranteed minimum pay for Guard members on state duty.
• Burial & Memorial Benefits: Burial eligibility at national or state veterans cemeteries, with additional county-level burial assistance.
• Extra Support: Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF) grants up to $500 a year for post-9/11 injuries or PTSD, and County Veteran ID Cards for easy access to local services.
