I’m sure you’ve heard the news. California sucks. It used to be Ohio getting all the bad press, damn it, Cleveland. Gavin Newsome has miraculously shoved California’s beautiful coastline and fantastic wilderness below the surface, left to struggle for air.
I’m kidding. California is still great, but the tax-heavy nature, Narcan vending machines, and doody-filled streets aren’t doing it any favors. Here’s the rub on California’s redeeming factors, or at least a way to improve it as a service member.
Highway Tolls:
The highways in Californian cities are overcrowded and unfun. If you’re a veteran or service member, you can circumvent some of the mouth-breathing populace on the
Tax Rates:
The Military Servicer Spouse Relief Act or MSSRA allows military spouses to claim residence in their home state for tax reasons. They are also allowed to vote in their home state. If you’re on active duty, you can also claim your home state for tax and voting purposes.
The Great Out Doors:
- Hunting & Fishing—Disabled Veterans: Veterans with a 50% or greater service-connected disability are eligible for a reduced-fee license. Both hunting and sport fishing licenses cost $9.46 each for qualified disabled veterans.
- Parks & Rec—California hosts some amazing national parks, which veterans can visit free of charge. Just bring proof of your veteran status (State ID with veteran status, VHIC, Military ID) to the gate or the visitor center, and they can almost always issue a new pass. California also offers free use to veterans with a disability of 50% or greater at state parks!
Burritos:
